What is Women In Charge?

Women In Charge is a grass roots organization that seeks to heal the spirit, build confidence, and educate women in need so that they can provide a better life for themselves and their children. It is the only program for women in the St. Louis area that combines one-on-one tutoring programs and group interaction in a comprehensive approach to nurture the mind, body and spirit of the individual. A pre-K children’s program is also available to the women while attending our classes.

What programs does Women In Charge offer?

Women In Charge offers: Weekly one-on-one/group Counseling, GED Preparation, Career Planning and Goal Setting, Tutoring in Math & Reading, Speech Communication in the Marketplace, A Children’s Program,  Computer Training, Stress Management—Yoga, Nutrition/Cooking Classes, Parent Mentoring

How are women referred to Women In Charge?

Women are referred to Women In Charge through several avenues: by word of mouth from previous participants, Division of Family Services, local shelters, the Parole Board, and ALIVE, just to name a few.

How can I join Women In Charge?

Enrollment is always open. When you are ready to join the program, call to make an appointment for a tour (314-432-7300.) You will see the program in action, meet the staff, and get all your questions answered. Typically you would begin the following week, but occasionally there is a waiting list; in which case the start date may be delayed.

How long has Women In Charge been around?

Women In Charge is a grass-roots program, which was first started by Victoria Sharp in 1993. After two years of organizing and fundraising, Women In Charge opened its doors to local women in University City in 1995.

How many women have attended the program?

We serve an average of 55 women and 60 children each year. Since its inception, Women In Charge has helped over 800 women.

Where is Women In Charge located?

Women In Charge is located at 1483 82nd Blvd. in University City MO (near Page and I-170) We are in the New City Fellowship Building directly across the street from Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School.

How many instructors do you have on staff?

We currently have seven instructors which include: an Executive Director, two certified teachers, a counselor, a math tutor, the Director of the Children’s Program, and the Children’s Program teacher’s assistant.

Do you have any volunteers in your program?

Yes! We do have volunteers helping with our program. Their specialties include reading, writing, math, computer skills, and GED preparation. They offer one-on-one tutoring and nurturing that our women deeply need and appreciate. Our volunteers are an invaluable source of strength, new energy, and inspiration for our women.

What makes Women In Charge unique?

Women In Charge is the only program for women in St. Louis that: – Offers a one-on-one tutoring program that addresses all aspects of the individual (mind, body, and spirit). – Offers a pre-K children’s program for women attending our classes. Women In Charge has an outreach program that counsels and helps women in crisis. This past year, we have served 110 women who were in crisis and had no resources or support.

How can I help?

Get involved! Come visit our center in University City. Seeing the work we do and the women and children we serve, we are sure that you will want to become involved. There are numerous volunteer opportunities at Women In Charge. Tutoring for one hour a week can make a huge difference in the lives of our women. Donate! Cash or In-Kind donations are always appreciated. Eighty cents of every dollar donated goes directly to serving our participants.
