What is Women In Charge?

Women In Charge is the only program in St. Louis that offers a one-on-one tutoring program addressing all aspects of the individual (mind, body, and spirit), as well as a free educational pre-K children’s program for those attending our classes. Working directly with our clientele allows us to evaluate when greater needs may be met through utilization of our on call Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Women In Charge offers:  HiSET Preparation, ESL classes, Children’s Program,  Computer Training, Stress Management/Enrichment classes.

How is someone referred to Women In Charge?

Referral to Women In Charge occurs through several avenues: by word of mouth from previous participants, Division of Family Services, local shelters, the Parole Board, and ALIVE, and through social media, just to name a few.

How can I join Women In Charge?

Enrollment is always open. When you are ready to join the program, call/text (314) 432-7300 to make an appointment for a tour. You will see the program in action, meet the staff, and get all your questions answered. Typically you would begin the following week, but occasionally there is a waiting list, in which case the start date may be delayed.

How long has Women In Charge been around?

Women In Charge is a grass-roots program, which was first started by Victoria Sharp in 1992. After two years of organizing and fundraising, Women In Charge opened its doors to local women in University City in 1995 and moved to our current location at 6930 Olive Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130 in 2023.

How many women have attended the program?

We serve an average of 55 women and 60 children each year. Since its inception, Women In Charge has helped over 1500 women and children.

Do you have any volunteers in your program?

Yes! We do have volunteers helping with our program primarily teaching English in the ESL program. We have numerous volunteers who help us with aspects from fundraising to office work. All of our volunteers are an invaluable source of strength, new energy, and inspiration for our women.

What makes Women In Charge unique?

Women In Charge is the only program in St. Louis that offers a one-on-one tutoring program addressing all aspects of the individual (mind, body, and spirit), as well as offering a free pre-K children’s program for those attending our classes. This past year, we have served over 110 women who were in crisis and had no resources or support.

How can I help?

Get involved! Come visit our center in University City, Missouri. Seeing the work we do with the people and children we serve is inspirational and there are numerous volunteer opportunities at Women In Charge. Donations are always appreciated, whether cash or in-kind. Eighty cents of every dollar donated goes directly to serving our participants.
